North Portland Neighborhoods

Arbor Lodge, a slightly less expensive alternative to Overlook, has excellent views of the river for which it was named and small, tidy cottages and bungalows on quiet, leafy streets.

Cathedral Park is a small neighborhood with dramatic views of the Willamette and Forest Park to the west and the abundant amenities of St. Johns to the east. Cathedral Park, the park for which the neighborhood is named, is a broad, pleasant lawn along the Willamette and home to the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival.

Hayden Island is unique among Portland neighborhoods. The only inhabited island within the city limits, Hayden Island is a study in opposites. At the island’s eastern end the massive Jantzen Beach Center shopping complex offers all of the big box stores that come standard in any American city, while a few minutes drive west finds you in relative wilderness.

Kenton, with its parks, pedestrian friendly Historic Kenton district and reasonable housing prices, is a great neighborhood for first-time homebuyers and families with children.

Overlook, an elegant neighborhood of stately homes perched on a bluff overlooking the Swan Island industrial area and the Willamette and West Hills beyond, is close to North Portland’s most exciting commercial areas, such a Mississippi and Williams Avenues, yet far enough from the hustle and bustle to strike a perfect balance between vitality and serenity.

Portsmouth is one of Portland’s most affordable neighborhoods and, given its proximity to the best amenities North Portland has to offer, one of its best deals.

St. Johns seems like its own city, given its charming dowtown and close-knit village atmosphere feel. The neighborhood offers wonderful views of Forest Park, across the Willamette, and features Smith and Bybee Lakes, the country’s largest wetlands within city limits. For first time home buyers, one of the most attractive things about St. Johns is housing prices, which remain relatively low.

University Park is centered around the beautiful campus of the University of Portland. Like adjacent Cathedral Park, University Park has great views of the West Hills and Forest Park across the Willamette, a secluded, quiet feel and, similar to adjacent Overlook, many grand homes.
